STuDly.

If our culture had any goddamn consistency, STIs, in a man at least, ought to be seen as a sign of virility. I mean, what better proof that you've at least had sex, and stereotypically that you're really getting around?

"You've got herpes? HIGH FIVE DUDE."

"Oh man, look at that guy, you just know he doesn't even carry HPV."

"Am I any good? Baby, I've got chlamydia and gonorrhea."

  1. Let's not encourage idiocy amongst the Frat crowd, eh?

  2. Actually, it is, although it's much better (meaning, in this case, not as prevalent) than it was in the 80s. The status increase that comes with having "The Clap" is obnoxious (so, you didn't wear a condom... and you're bragging about it?), but it is *consistent.* More prevalent in the flyover states where I've spent most of my life, than on the East Coast, where I went to school. Less prevalent now than then, but still very much here...

  3. At my school, getting tested for STDs is a sign of virility. The STD-Testing van was here this morning and you could see people literally puffing up as their friends walked by.

  4. I'm amazed and kind of shocked to hear this. It's pretty much opposite of my experience.

I guess it makes sense, sort of?

    Sort of.

  5. Hey, my school is full of weirdass hippies and nerds. "We do it one way" is a pretty good sign that the rest of the world doesn't.

  6. That's actually what they did in medieval France and England. It was actually fashionable to have STDs, especially Chlamydia, because it showed that you were getting laid a lot.

  7. When I was 15 I went to a gynecologist because of severe pain with my period, and I fronted like I needed to be tested for STDs even though I'd never even kissed anyone open mouth at the time.

  8. It's totally consistent. If you consider that sex is something that men trick women into giving them and women won't have sex because they like it, an STD would be a sign that you slept with a woman will give it to pretty much anyone, as opposed to a woman who normally wouldn't give it to anyone.
